Statement
Predominantly my sculptures are influenced by my visceral reaction to the landscape. It’s a feeling I simply accept, enjoy and appreciate. Over time this ‘feeling’ has become more like an increasing awareness of my connection with those who have come before me. As we travel through the landscape memories are formed, maps are made of our journeys as we move away from and return home. The way we used to map our journey through landmarks or by the stars reinforces a sense of connection with a place. The stars visible on a clear night, has since childhood evoked a feeling of timelessness, of insignificance yet also a deep sense of belonging. Though I’m now aware that my DNA is only around 20% Scottish, my link with this land that I am so attached to is not as strong as I assumed it would be. It doesn’t alter how I react to it. The areas where some of my ancestors were from are finding their way on to my sculptures through mark making. As my own family expands new maps will emerge mingling with rediscovered histories, giving a brief snapshot of who we think we are and where we came from.
